Triplopia
The light of the body is the eye.
The eye is the window to the soul.
“Triplopia” explores three realities through light; our apparent perceived reality, a reality in which our vision is shaped by our judgement of others’ souls, and a reality in which one’s soul can be viewed by the outside world. The perceived reality features ‘normal’ lighting in line with our ‘every day’, and introduces the viewer to each of the characters: The Prisoner, The Prude (and the) Predator, The Press, The Professor, The Prohibitionist, The Printmaker, The Pragmatist, and The Props Master. The second reality uses gel lens filters to simulate the viewer’s judgement of the character and becomes distorted between the lines of these realities. The third reality paints the character with the light of his/her soul, which is not always the same as the viewer’s forced judgement.
“Triplopia” is a challenge to the eye. Things are lost and gained throughout the experience. The subjects are filtered through the characters they are portraying which are filtered through the photographer, and that work is filtered through the camera. Each reality has its own filters, and even the editing process adds another. Finally, the images are filtered through the viewer’s eyes. This is all to say that our reality, and our perceptions of others, is wholly subjective, and “Triplopia” seeks to explore this idea.
