The Verge is a media website that “covers the intersection of technology, science, art, and culture,” with a focus on Tech news. To keep things fair to the other platforms I’m exploring this week, when choosing articles from The Verge, I chose my articles from its Tech page based on how interesting I found their headlines, and stuck with those no matter the content.
Tinder promises features that ‘blur lines’ between physical and digital dating
I don’t use Tinder, so its content is a bit elusive to me, but blurring the lines between real life and digital life is a topic that is of great interest to me, and thus I ended up clicking on this article. The article gives some background on Tinder as a company, or rather as an entity of the company “Match”, and its financial assets and projected growth. However, I clicked on the article because I wanted to learn about how a popular dating app is going to blur the lines of reality, not about its financial merits. The article never actually explains how Tinder is going to accomplish the premise of the headline, but I don’t think Tinder’s CEO who made that claim has explained it yet either. Still, it was disappointing to have that question raised by the headline unfulfilled. Check out the article here.
Apple says it immediately contacted FBI about unlocking Texas shooter’s iPhone
This article was interesting because it wasn’t necessarily a tech news item, but a national news item that had a tech component. It talks about the growing tension between law enforcement and tech companies concerning unlocking users’ devices for criminal investigations. I followed the San Bernardino shooter-iPhone situation a while back concerning the same thing (which the article recalls). Overall, the article is straightforward and straight-laced like any other normal news article. Check out the article here.
