I had so much fun with these girls yesterday! One of the things that struck me most from our talks was how many said their favorite subject was science or math.
The National Girls Collaborative Project finds that K-12 female students achievement on math and science standardized tests is on par with their male peers’ test scores, and female students participate in high level maths and science courses at similar rates as their male peers. Yet, this all changes at college and in the workforce, especially in Computer Science (my field), Engineering, and Physics fields.
Young girls’ love for STEM starts early on, but many are discouraged from continuing this love after high school graduation. STEM fields have some of the best job opportunities and wages, and are great opportunities for intellectual growth and satisfaction. I encourage you to talk to the young girls in your life about STEM, and my message box is always open if she (or you) have any questions!
Valentine’s Day Cards for Meals on Wheels 2023
“Love Letters” is an Art Technically workshop that teaches students introductory coding through creating Valentine’s Day cards that are then printed and donated to senior meal delivery services. This year was the seven-year anniversary of the Love Letters project!
Valentine’s Day Party at the Bennington Senior Center
I had so much fun visiting seniors and giving out Valentine’s Day cards at the Meals on Wheels program in Bennington, Vermont yesterday for their Valentine’s Day lunch! Homebound seniors in the program also got a Valentine’s Day card delivered with their meal.
Delivering Valentine’s Day Gifts to the Maine Children’s Hospital
I visited patients at the Maine children’s hospital and brought science kits, craft kits, STEM/STEAM books (including Baby Loves Science board books), and scientist and artist Barbie dolls as gifts.
