I had so much fun with these girls yesterday! One of the things that struck me most from our talks was how many said their favorite subject was science or math.
The National Girls Collaborative Project finds that K-12 female students achievement on math and science standardized tests is on par with their male peers’ test scores, and female students participate in high level maths and science courses at similar rates as their male peers. Yet, this all changes at college and in the workforce, especially in Computer Science (my field), Engineering, and Physics fields.
Young girls’ love for STEM starts early on, but many are discouraged from continuing this love after high school graduation. STEM fields have some of the best job opportunities and wages, and are great opportunities for intellectual growth and satisfaction. I encourage you to talk to the young girls in your life about STEM, and my message box is always open if she (or you) have any questions!
Black Families Technology Awareness Day 2024
This was the 3rd year I’ve taught an Art Technically Astrobotany workshop at BFTAD. Students in the astrobotany workshop learned about plant, food, and space science and toured the plant lab and smart conference room at RPI’s Center for Lighting Enabled Systems and Applications (LESA)
2023 STEM Lab Coat and Year Recap
Every year, I have a lab coat that I let all of my students sign. This year, I happened to also be Miss United States and brought it with me during my travels across the U.S. as I was promoting STEM education.
I helped students talk to Astronauts on the ISS
Last week, Brighton Elementary School students asked questions to astronauts living on the International Space Station.
