Love Letters is a campaign to make Valentine’s Day cards for senior meal delivery services. Love Letters was created by DoSomething.org in partnership with Meals on Wheels America in 2016. Lily’s 2016 campaign in Memphis, TN worked with 3 elementary schools and gave 150 Valentine’s Day cards to the Memphis Interfaith Association’s Meals on Wheels program. The 2018 campaign worked with Edmund Burke School, Jelleff Boys and Girls Club, and American University students to make 161 STEM themed and #MadeWithCode cards for Iona Senior Services. The cards will be distributed at the Feb. 9 weekend meal delivery service and at the Feb. 14 in house meal service.

How You Can Help

I want to hand-make cards.

All you need is colored paper, markers/crayons/pencils, and an idea! You can find ideas for cards in the card gallery below and on Pinterest. If you want to make fancier cards, you can also use glitter, stickers, scissors, glue, ribbons, etc, and remember, it’s the thought that counts!

I want to code a card.

This year’s campaign has a STEM component! We encourage you to make cards with code, and teach others, especially kids, how to, too. Instructions for all ages on making a Valentine’s Day card using CoffeeScript (a simplified version of JavaScript) can be found below.

I want to help others make cards.

Gather some friends and family and have a card decorating party. Volunteer at a local elementary or middle school and make cards with students. Spread the campaign message across social media and encourage your friends to do the same!

I have cards to send in.

If your cards are made with code, you can email LilyKDonaldson@gmail.com with an image file or link to your card! If your cards are physical, email Lily for an address to send them to.

I want to help in other ways.

You can donate supplies to make cards (paper, coloring sticks, glitter, stickers, other craft supplies) by emailing LilyKDonaldson@gmail.com for an address to send them to. Monetary donations will go toward buying craft supplies and covering the cost of printing cards made with code. If you want to donate money, you can Venmo @Lily-Donaldson with the text “Love Letters Donation” or PayPalMe.

Make a Card with Code

You can make a Valentine’s Day card with CoffeeScript, a simplified version of JavaScript, using Kano World’s Make Art Playground. Learn the basics of Make Art and CoffeeScript by starting with the basic challenges. Then, create your own Valentine’s Day card or use the sample code below. Practice changing colors, fonts, sizes, and even moving things around! When you’re done, save your creation and email the code to LilyKDonaldson@gmail.com, or share it and email the link!
